Though a part of the body that many people know little about, the thyroid plays a major part in daily wellness. It is the master regulator in the body, driving your metabolism, energy levels, and overall health. Basically, we couldn't function without it! This little butterfly-shaped gland located in your neck affects everything — unfortunately, it often gets overlooked, and people don’t even know that there could be an issue.

Thyroid hormone is one of the three key hormones that helps to regulate metabolism. Having too much of the thyroid hormone, called Hyperthyroid, can cause excessive weight loss, anxiety, sweating, heat intolerance, and tremor. Having too little thyroid hormone, called Hypothyroid, can cause weight gain, depression, cold intolerance, hair loss, and sleep disturbance. This is why it's so important to keep your hormones balanced!

Part of our Thyroid Test includes testing for TSH; TSH stands for "Thyroid Stimulating Hormone" and it indicates how hard the body is working to get thyroid hormone made by the thyroid gland. A very high TSH means the body is usually lacking thyroid hormone so it keeps sending the TSH signal to the thyroid gland to make more. A very low TSH means the body has more than enough thyroid hormone and doesn't need the thyroid gland to make any more.

There are many reasons why someone can have too much or too little thyroid hormone. We test for TSH in our Metabolism Test panel as well to indicate if there may be a thyroid hormone issue... whereas our Thyroid Test panel looks at one possible cause of thyroid problems, autoantibodies, and also looks at the hormone level itself so individuals can see how much hormone their thyroid is producing.

If your thyroid is low or imbalanced, it's a strong possibility that something else is off in your body which is why it's crucial to get your thyroid tested.
